SEOMoving SEO into the Mobile Future
More and more you find that people have transitioned from the home desktop computer, to the laptop, and even more so now, onto the mobile devices. With such a plethora of different devices out there, it’s no wonder that the idea of Search Engine Optimization has gone mobile. And would you believe that the very hierarchy that determines our rankings is also the same consortium that brings up the option for mobile SEO?
One thing that Google has done for us is allow the use of different URL’s when it comes to the desktop link and the mobile link to your site. Before it was an issue when you had a mobile site tagged m.yourdomain.com, more so when it was strictly WAP, but now Google is taking strides to associate the commonality of the two and make sure that if your site is prepared correctly, then it will not rank them separately. But the biggest problem people face is the constant need to update their mobile sites and inform all the different user agents. This is why responsive design is the key to flexibility in the mobile market.
Another option for mobile search engine optimization is the “Same URL, Same HTML” method. By this I mean simply what it says. Creating your site that is diverse enough in coding to optimally work on all devices. This may be tough to do and in many cases only appeals to larger mobile devices, but ultimately it is the easiest way to procure the results you desire. For starters, it will help consolidate all your ranking metrics to the same URL and it makes it much simpler to implement. Depending on the purpose and content of your site, this may be the way to go.
Google has also provided some specific specifications to help you optimize your site for the mobile world. This is very important as more and more people surf the web on the go. With increasing demand for longer work days and tighter deadlines, it’s almost impossible not to have mobile capabilities. Part of that is hiring needed services and purchasing necessary product to push your business forward while on the go. One thing to consider when implementing SEO is your target market and the type of devices they use. Feature driven phones with limited browser can only render so much. Smartphones allow for updated HTML code standards and feature rich sites. So your ability to appeal to this broad spectrum of users is based on how you manipulate your sites appearance and function to this demographic.
As the mobility of business continues to evolve, the more the use of mobile business will be inevitable. Ironically we may end up right back to the beginning where mobile phones can handle the same as a desktop computer and the need for the constant tech updates to your site may not be needed. But that is years off, and until battery life and internet speed on mobile devices catch up to the home PC and laptop, you still need to focus very intently on the importance of mobile SEO.
